Best Pellets For Pellet Stoves

Here are some answers to a few common wood pellet questions. What are wood pellets? How do they work? When Ken Tucker ran his lumber milling operation in the late 1970s, he was trying to develop a method for pelletizing wood waste. Ken was wondering if lumber mills could compress their wood waste into pellets for animal feed which would be easier to move, store, and burn for larger commercial applications.

A colleague told Dr. Jerry Whitfield about a man in Idaho who was doing the same thing around the same time when he was conducting research on alternative fuels at Boeing Airlines.

When Jerry and Ken met, they created an entire industry around wood pellets. Wood pellets were invented by Ken, and pellet stoves were created by Jerry.  The pellet heat market in North America has grown to over one million homes, and in Europe, over 80% of the wood pellets produced worldwide are used to heat homes.

The appliances that burn wood pellets and wood pellets have evolved together since the beginning, so while all stoves should be capable of burning any pellet on the market, there are certain stoves that perform better than others. As a matter of fact, some pellets just don’t heat as well as they should.

Other fuels such as corn can be used to power these stoves. These can be a great alternative in a limited number of states where corn is abundant and affordable, but not readily available in most states, so prices are prohibitive.

Also, corn burns really dirty and turns your stove and glass black because it contains a lot of natural sugar. To make sure you make the best wood pellet purchase for your pellet heating needs, we’re attempting to clarify this issue in this article.

Need to know what pellets are best for your pellet stove? As a result, we recommend various products that achieve high energy efficiency, environmental friendliness, and provide the best value for money.

However, pellet stoves are only as efficient as the fuel that you feed them. Despite the many advantages pellet stoves provide for homeowners, they are only as effective as the fuel that they burn. To achieve the greatest heat efficiency and the least waste, you need the best wood pellets.

The vast variety of wood pellets makes it difficult to determine which brand of pellets is the best for your own requirements.

For your convenience, we have researched the best-rated wood pellets available today, as well as which ones offer the best value for money, so you don’t have to. Making informed choices is easy with our wood pellet brand comparison.

Our comprehensive buying guide will provide you with comprehensive information about hardwood pellets or softwood pellets, or what wood pellets are.

In the winter, wood-burning stoves and pellet stoves are environmentally friendly, cost-saving options that can help you save on your energy bill. In addition to extending the lifespan of your fireplace, you also make it less likely that your furnace will run so long and as often while burning wood pellets. It has been reported that some homes are reliant only on wood pellets and do not even bother with other sources of heat.

1. Okanagan Douglas Fir Pellet

Okanagan Douglas Fir Pellets are one of the best wood pellets on the market today. If you’re looking for one of the best wood pellets available, then look no further. For several years, buyers have been praising these pellets due to their excellent performance when burning them in a pellet stove. They are among the cleanest-burning options available on the market today because they are made entirely of sawdust from softwood.

There are two types of pellets made by Okanagan. The brand’s top seller is the original Okanagan Premium. Our favourite pellets are the Doug Fir pellets because they are so pure and considered the best. They do not contain any additives nor are they made from recycled wood.

The Okanagan Douglas Fir Pellets are known for their low ash content, which can be attributed to their 100% softwood sawdust composition. In its own words, Okanagan Pellets has “set the standard in super premium wood pellet fuel”. The premium quality puts a small premium on the price, but these pellets are worry-free. This stove is made of 100% Douglas Fir, low ash, and requires less cleaning and maintenance.

The wood pellets available at Bear Mountain are great for heating purposes. The Okanagan Douglas Fir Pellet is made from Douglas Fir, one of the options for pellets. Bear Mountain also offers 100% natural hardwood barbecue pellets (available at Amazon).

If you want a grilling pellet that can also be used for heating purposes at a reasonable price, this is a great option. Just imagine the smoke-like flavor your food will have after all of this grilling. This is an excellent addition to a BBQ because it’s a unique and natural way to prepare food. Hardwood BBQ pellets as well as Douglas Fir Pellets burn clean and evenly. Your home will remain cosy while causing no harm to the environment.

Reduced carbon footprints are often one of the main factors in choosing a pellet stove. You should therefore prioritise clean-burning fuel. It will keep you warm without damaging the environment when you choose the Okanagan Douglas Fir pellets. Besides burning so cleanly, the bag leaves less ash to clean up after use.

What is the best way to clean your stove? Do you have a vacuum to remove ash from the stove? Read our guide to find out what’s best. It’s relatively easy to maintain and clean your stove since the output of ash is just three tablespoons per bag. Those who enjoy the idea of a pellet stove, but dislike the idea of having to scrub it after each use, will find this to be great news.

Despite their high cost, the Okanagan Douglas Fir pellets are of very high quality and offer great value. As long as you burn these pellets evenly and effectively, you will save energy and time in the long run.

Douglas Fir Pellets from Okanagan are hard to beat for their benefits. It’s hard to find pellets that burn as evenly and efficiently as these, and none that burn as cleanly. Okanagan is a great choice if you want your house to be warm while remaining environmentally sustainable.

2. Vermont Pellets

Softwood produced with sustainably harvested trees produces high BTU’s and little ash with a carbon neutral package. Using a proprietary process called HEATRIGHT, Vermont Pellets create cleaner and longer-burning flames through super-compression. “Excellent product,” says the online reviewers. It does not contain dust. Far superior to wood. Amazing customer service. Heat burns more efficiently so you use less.

Pine forests provide 100% softwood for this product. Pellets produced with these products produce very little ash – less than 20 cups per ton of fuel. One ton is estimated at $309.00

Pellets from Vermont could be what you’re looking for if you are looking for softwood pellets. The low ash production of these stoves has made them a cult favourite among pellet stove owners due to the time saved on maintenance and cleaning.

As well as being clean burning, pellet fuels also have the highest BTUs (heat output) of all pellet fuels, which means you’re receiving the best value for your money.

When you use these pellets as your main source of heat, your room will be cosier and warmer than ever before. As a result of the manufacturer’s work on their engineering and manufacturing processes, they developed a proprietary Heatright process that has been trademarked.

They have thus been able to produce wood pellets that burn more efficiently and at a higher temperature for optimal value for money, as well as being created to burn as cleanly as possible. As well as being completely made from eco-friendly softwood which has been sustainably harvested, Vermont pellets are also among the best wood pellets in terms of helping to protect the environment.

In addition to sustainably harvested wood, Vermont Wood Pellet Company also uses secondary growth wood from the Green Mountains of Vermont. Choosing Vermont Wood Pellets helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions both locally and globally.

Because of that, heating with wood pellets is an environmentally friendly option that supports the local economy and reduces foreign oil dependence. Approximately 50 local loggers and truckers furnish Vermont Wood Pellet Co. with its supplies; their employees also live locally. Local, sustainable, clean – what’s not to like?

Vermont Wood Pellet Co. can back up their belief that they make the best super-premium pellet fuel available on the market today with test results and lab reports. Vermont Wood Pellets deliver even more BTU than you were looking for with their low ash content. Find out more about Vermont Wood Pellets.

3. Hamer’s Hot Ones

Hamer’s Hot Ones are manufactured from Appalachian sawdust, which is provided by eastern US lumber operations. These Ohio-made pellets consistently receive positive consumer reviews regarding their “amazing hardwood floor smell.”. We are pleased to announce that Hamer Pellet Fuel Company meets the Pellet Fuels Institute guidelines for Premium Grade pellet fuel. Laboratory tests are conducted every fifth ton of product.

The Hamer Pellet Fuel Company has manufactured residential pellets for more than 90 years in the east. Hamer Pellet Fuel Company is a privately-owned business. Hamer’s Hot Ones and Hamer’s Smokers are available year round at hundreds of professional retailers and are backed by generations of family tradition and dedication from the Hamer Family, who devote themselves to providing the best heating and grilling experiences to their loyal clients.

They wanted to find a way to repurpose their excess clean sawdust in the late 1980s. In order to fill the demand for premium hardwood pellet fuel, we decided to start Hamer Pellet Fuel. By-products of the timber industry are made into wood pellets, which are a cheap, convenient, and renewable fuel. Environmentally friendly, it’s a fuel that’s highly efficient with limited emissions.

It comes in 40 pound bags that are convenient to load and provide you with the warmth of wood heat without the mess. The sawdust originates directly from our own sawmills and other local, reliable sources, which means it satisfies our standards. In our on-site lab, rigorous tests are conducted on every fifth ton of hardwood pellet fuel to ensure a high-quality product that burns hot and leaves very little ash behind. Smoker Pellets manufactured by Hammer Pellet Fuel are also great for BBQs. These decks are available in Hickory, Cherry, Oak, and Maple. We offer hardwood pellets for sale at Hamer Pellet Fuel. Find out more by visiting the Hamer Pellet Fuel website.

The sawdust they use for the manufacture of Hammers Hot Ones pellet fuel comes from their own lumber operations in West Virginia, located in the heart of the Appalachian Region. Approximately 14,000 acres are in the mid-Atlantic and NorthEast States (WV, VA, PA, MD, NJ, OH, CT, Del, NC and Mass). What are the benefits of Hamer’s Hot Ones? Upon compression, the dust becomes pellets that produce clean, reliable heat with very little emissions and virtually no ash. Having been in business for over 40 years, They are the oldest residential pellet manufacturer in the eastern U.S. Providing pellets of the highest quality has always been our goal.

A dust trailer transports the dust from the collection point to the plant, ensuring quality as the dust is protected while travelling.

They do not use binders in our dust drying and compression. Hamer’s is 100% hardwood and all natural, as opposed to some competitors who add products to decrease their production costs. Hamer’s product is 100% hardwood and all natural, unlike some competitors who work with additional products to reduce production costs.

They are able to set high quality control standards because our Hamer sawmills set hands-on standards. Besides testing the raw materials, Their testing program is unmatched in its rigorousness and rigour. At the on-site laboratory, they check the pellets for ash content and fine content every fifth ton produced to ensure they meet or exceed premium grade standards.

It is impressive how much heat our pellet fuel produces with such a high BTU output. Their pellet fuel burns hotter than competitors when they asked retailers when we started our business. Our pellet fuel is named Hamer’s Hot Ones because of that.

An automated bag line and an automated hooder inside our pellet plant provide a uniform and evenly packaged product, making it look great even when transported to retailers. They ensure safe and clean transportation of our pellets to dealers by securing every ton with thick UV-protected hooders.

Retailers and customers alike will appreciate our packaging on 40 pound bags, which is UV protected. Although our pellet fuel is protected in thick hooder bags when it is being shipped, we still recommend placing the pellets in a dry, protected area to ensure their longevity. To maintain their reputation as a maker of hardwood pellet fuel that burns hot and emits low levels of ash, they do all of these things.

The Hammer Pellet Fuel Company is proud to comply with the Premium Grade standard of the Pellet Fuels Institute. Quality control is carried out on every fifth ton.

Using wood sawdust from our own lumber operations, Hamers Hot Ones pellet fuels are produced in West Virginia, right in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains.  The mid-Atlantic and north-eastern states are covered by the distribution area.

What are the benefits of Hamer’s Hot Ones? As the dust is compressed into pellets, it produces clean, reliable heat with minimal emissions. The amount of ash produced is extremely small.

In the Eastern United States, They are the oldest manufacturer of pellets for residential use. This gives them the  experience necessary to manufacture quality pellets.

The Hardwoods’ Superior density almost eliminates hopper hang-ups. The final product contains less than 0.5% fines, i.e. dust, and does not produce more than 1% ash. Typically, pellets usually have a moisture content under 8 %.

The pellets produced by Hamer Pellet Fuels are of high quality and low ash. Hardwood pellets derived from Hamer’s Hot Ones are made from the purest and most environmentally friendly Appalachian hardwood sawdust. PFI (Pellet Fuels Institute) established various standards for pellets of various grades years ago, with Premium Grade being the most demanding. As part of our commitment to cleaning and heating our pellets, we go to great lengths to ensure that our customers can keep warm and satisfied during the cold months of the year. It is extremely important to us to put our name on every bag and stand behind the product.

In our family owned sawmills and from other reliable, clean, sustainable local resources, we manufacture our products using Appalachian hardwood sawdust. Harmer uses only hardwood dust that hasn’t come into contact with the ground during the processing.

During the past winter, it was brutally cold and lengthy. There was a shortage of anything related to heat. Particularly difficult to locate were wood pellets. Our stove customers, however, continued to receive supplies, even during the winter season. There were also times when we had enough pellets for general distribution.

The Hammer Pellet Fuel Company has been manufacturing pellets for residential use in Eastern States since 1988. Hamer Pellet Fuel Company is a family-owned business. With generations of Hamer Family tradition backed by generations of leadership and the best employees, Hamer’s Hot Ones and Hamer’s Smokers are available year round at hundreds of professional retailers.

  4. Kirtland Premium Pellets

A wood pellet manufacturer, Kirkland Products produces wood pellet fuel. The source of our wood and the transportation of the fuel are all local. Approximately 3 percent of the dollars residents invest in fossil-based heating products impact their region’s economy, while 75% of the dollars residents spend on biomass stay within the community.

The pellet products they formulate are used to create bedding for small animals and animals, spill relief, and grilling. Pellet products selected from Jack Pine wood contribute to the sustainable harvesting of Jack Pine stands, which contributes to the establishment of new Jack Pine stands.

The name of these pellets implies that they are high-quality, and so you can expect an impressively efficient burning process. The quality of these pellet stove pellets is guaranteed since they are made in Michigan. Because they contain both soft and hardwoods, the amount of ash in them is extremely low, since virtually no bark is present. People who are looking for clean-burning fuel are going to like this news and those who want to spend less time cleaning and maintaining their pellet stoves will also like this news.

This pellet type stands out because the pellets go through two separate rigorous screening processes before being put into your stove’s hopper. You can be sure that none of the pellets will be broken or damaged when you open the bag and pour them in.

This product from Michigan combines hard wood with soft wood. Two-step screening and low bark content help minimise ash production, helping to ensure unbroken pellets for consistent burning. Kirtland Premium Pellets harness the abundant resources of Jack Pine from Northern Michigan, a one waste product. The operations of Kirtland Products also improve the habitat of the Kirtland Warbler, which is a famous yet endangered bird. During the summer, this rare bird breeds in the jack pine forests of northern Michigan.

Featuring the superior heat of Jack Pine and the durability and cleanliness of American hardwoods, Kirtland brand wood pellets perform more efficiently than other brands. Kirtland Premium Pellets wood chips come only from lumber mills in Northern Michigan, so they are pure, virgin and clean. Kirtland Premium Pellets support local businesses and are able to monitor the quality of the material used to make our pellets closely so that we can ensure our pellets meet the quality standards. Achieving high quality pellets requires constant testing at all stages of production to ensure consistent and high quality. Kirtland Premium Pellets  are tested to meet or exceed the Pellet Fuel Institute’s standard.

You can easily buy these pellets online and get discounts frequently, so you get excellent value for your money.

 5. Bear Mountain Pellets

Bear Mountain pellets are also made from Douglas Fir, and as you might expect from pellet stove pellets that are made from this high-quality recycled wood, you can expect a much more intense source of heat as well as a longer burn time.

This ensures that you’re getting great value for money when you buy this superior product.

When you open the bag of Bear Mountain pellets you won’t find a lot of debris or sawdust. This means that you’ll be able to burn everything in the bag.

In fact, the Bear Mountain brand is known to rank very highly in terms of the consistency of the quality of its products, and even the most demanding homeowner is likely to be satisfied by their purchase when they opt for this premium brand.

Bear Mountain offers several different wood pellets that are great for heating purposes. One option is a pellet made of Douglas Fir, the same material the Okanagan Douglas Fir Pellet is made of.

Another great Bear Mountain pellet option is their Bear Mountain 100% Natural Hardwood BBQ pellets (available on Amazon). Not only is this pellet great for cooking, but it’s also an excellent heating option if you want a multi-purpose pellet to handle all your needs at a good cost. Imagine all of the grilling and the smokey flavour this can add to your food. It’s great for a BBQ and is a unique and all-natural way to prepare a meal.

Bear Mountain’s pellets contain a 5% moisture content, which maintains a low ash production and accumulation in your grill. When there is excessive ash production in your grill, the set temperature can lower or climb at a moment’s notice, resulting in an unevenly cooked product. The low moisture content in Bear Mountain’s pellets helps the temperature to stay at its set range, producing a nice, thin, blue smoke to cook and flavour your meat, seafood, or vegetables exactly how you intended. The estimated burn time of these wood pellets in a pellet grill is approximately 1 lb. of pellets per hour on a low smoke setting, or up to 3 lb. per hour on a high setting. For a more accurate burn rate, please reference the owner’s manual of your grill.

Both the Douglas Fir Pellet and the Hardwood BBQ pellet offer a clean and even burn. You will keep your house cosy while not harming the world around you.

Recycled and renewable sawmill residue combine for high-performance, low moisture content, and less than .5% ash. Consumer reviewers consider a small price premium reasonable, compared to product performance. Available at Big Box retailers and their websites.

Features: Northwest US company; 100% natural wood with no glue or binders. They are also certified pure by the Pellet Fuels Institute (PFI), something to look for in any brand you select.

Louisville, Colorado-based Bear Mountain Gourmet BBQ Woods, makers of hardwood pellets for barbecue with a wood-fired flavour, has launched its new barbecue Craft Blends, a collection of 100 percent natural hardwood blends curated to create wood-fired flavour.

As the pellet barbecue market continues to grow this season, so does the demand for pellets.

“Pellet grilling is a game changer for the backyard barbecue,” said Ben Madden, Bear Mountain BBQ product manager. “Consumers love the convenience, simplicity and the amazing wood smoke flavours that cooking with wood pellets offer.”

By adding wood pellets to the grill—gas, charcoal, electric and pellet grills—grill masters can use their own equipment to create the flavours and aromas that come from hardwood.

Bear Mountain BBQ uses natural hardwood to add rich, smoky flavour to food without using anything artificial. As with all of Bear Mountain’s pellets, these new Craft Blends are made from 100 percent premium all-natural hardwoods, with no flavourings, fillings or additives.

Stronger hardwoods add richness to steak, medium to mild wood species pair perfectly with chicken or pork, and lighter fruitwoods complement the flavors of seafood.

“Grill masters will enjoy experimenting with these new blends during this year’s grilling season,” said Madden. “Our Craft Blend BBQ pellets empower grillers to create great tasting food, no matter what they’re cooking. Each Craft Blend has a unique smoke flavour profile to inspire cooks to create delicious meats and veggies and share with their friends and family. That’s what we bring to the barbecue.”

The kiln-dried pellets are low moisture and they burn clean with little ash, which reduces how often the ash cup needs to be cleaned.

The new Craft Blends are added to Bear Mountain’s existing wood pellets for grilling: Hickory, Apple, Mesquite, Cherry, Oak, Maple, Pecan and Alder.

All varieties come in a 20-pound bag and are made in the USA.

“We’re committed to doing barbecue wood pellets right,” said Madden. “And by right, we mean using only the best all-natural hardwoods, maintaining a relentless focus on quality and having an adventurous spirit when crafting flavours to enjoy with friends, family and a cold beer.”

Developing a full new flavour profile in your recipes can be done naturally and easily with Bear Mountain 100% natural hardwood alder BBQ pellets. These hardwood pellets are crafted with 100% premium, all-natural hardwood, without any additives, flavourings, or fillers, so you can showcase your recipes with the prime palate provided by Mother Nature. Specifically, these alder BBQ pellets enrich recipes with a delicately sweet smokiness. This flavour profile enriches everything including poultry, seafood, and pork, and can be used in gas, charcoal, or electric grills.

Using these hardwood BBQ pellets couldn’t be easier. To use with a pellet grill, simply fill your hopper with pellets and allow the auger in the grill to filter the pellets into the heat source as needed. To use with a gas, charcoal, or electric grill or smoker, either use the sprinkle method, pan method, or foil pouch method to impart the impeccable smoky flavouring to your foods. The sprinkle method consists of sprinkling a few ounces of wood pellets directly over your hot coals so they give off smoke that infuses your food as they burn. The pan method includes using a small baking pan that is filled 1/3 full with pellets before being covered with foil and poked with a few holes to allow for smoke ventilation. This pan is placed directly on your hot coals or near your heat source to give off smoke as it burns. The foil pouch method is similar to the pan method, but it only uses foil that is folded and crimped together around the pellets, and then poked with holes for ventilation. No matter what method you use to smoke your dishes, these pellets are the perfect complement.

Driven by the love of barbecue and united with the dedication to sustainability, Bear Mountain set out to combine these two passions into one product: 100% all-natural hardwood pellets for creating the ultimate barbecuing experience. Maintaining a manufacturing plant in the USA under their own control, Bear Mountain hand selects their various woods from trusted sources, ensures that all wood is clean and free of debris, kiln-dries the wood without additives, flavourings, or fillers to showcase its natural flavour, and oversees the entire process of turning the wood into pellets to ensure consistency across the board. Plus, as a sustainably sourced company, even the bags that house these pellets are recyclable for an all-around, eco-friendly product. All of this control over the finite details of the process is anything but simple, but ensuring quality to continue the craftsmanship and art of barbecuing has been Bear Mountain’s passion since 1990, with their values growing stronger every year.

8.US Stove Company HCHP 40 Pellets

The US GW1949 is a non-electric pellet stove from the innovative Wisesay series. This freestanding stove operates on a natural gravity feed method. It helps to eliminate the need for the electrical and mechanical components present in typical pellet heaters. On top of this, its sleek black finish and attractive modern design complement a wide range of decors.

This non-electric stove is an ideal source of heat in areas with limited access to electricity. It can generate up to 40,000 BTU and could heat an area of up to 2,000 square feet for an intermittent heating application. This non-catalytic pellet stove comes with a hopper that can hold up to 60 lbs of pellets and requires a vent with a 3” diameter.

This eco-friendly GW1949 Wiseway stove offers an efficient and easy operation. A propane torch starts a draft before enabling the pellets to enter the central burning chamber. The chute then allows pellets to fall into the secondary burn chamber when opened, keeping flames from entering the hopper. Thanks to the natural draft, the flame travels up past the window to heat the tubes. Adjustments are made easy by opening and closing the fresh air intakes on the front of the stove. Opening the slider lets more air in, slows down the burn for less heat, whereas closing it speeds up the burn for more heat. Since this impressively designed stove does not utilise electricity, heat radiated off the 3.5″ tubing with the steel baffles on the back.

Best of all, this stove has small clearances, making installation a breeze. This pellet stove comes with a limited lifetime firebox warranty, a 1-year all other parts warranty, and a 1-year electrical parts warranty, giving you peace of mind in the event of any manufacturing defects.

US Stove has always been committed to providing quality, affordability, and value in all of its products. Get this US GW1949 Wiseway non-electric pellet stove and enjoy a more efficient and warmer room, only here at PlumbersStock!

US Stove’s HomComfort Premium Wood Pellets are produced from all

100% recycled natural wood fiber using both hard and soft wood.

length of 1/4″ or 5⁄16″ in diameter, or approximately 6-8mm. Each

pound will provide approximately 8, 000 to 9, 000 BTU.

These pellets made of oak hardwood are arguably the best option that money can buy. They are made of 100% natural recycled oak hardwood and are specifically designed to deliver as much heat as possible in such a small package.

The HCHP 40 pellets give off extremely low amounts of ash when they burn, and they also have very little moisture, making for a nice, dry burn. Because they burn so cleanly, they also cause very little smoke as they burn. This makes for easy maintenance and minor cleanup.

9. Traeger Grills PEL331

Utilising Traeger grills PEL331 comes with many benefits, such as good heat output, clean blue smoke, and premium quality wood. We liked the signature blend the best, because it protects the environment without causing any harm.

Wood sawdust is utilised by manufacturers to make these from wood that already exists and is up to their standards.

It is therefore unnecessary to harvest even one tree to produce these pellets. They are, however, unsurpassed for performance.

The product has proven to be highly popular among recent buyers. However, the signature blend that offered a delicately scented smoke while causing the least damage to the environment was the thing that most impressed them.

I would recommend this product both for grilling and heating purposes. Having the work done on your own will not leave much of a carbon footprint, and if you’re willing to clean up the remnants after the work is done, it’s all yours. There is no better product on the market, in my opinion.
